Popcorn Day
white birds flock
bleached into the burning sun
clear blue breeze, serene
and we are undone
grass blows on all sides of the harbor
like a crop, expectant and lush
this all will burst open, I know it but
I’ll hold onto you ‘til the rush
today makes a mark in the future
impressed with your name here
the pier where we sat with your head in my lap
will stir my memory when you disappear
the place I have made for the size and the shape
of you fits nobody better
we’re imperfect, I’ve tried hard for less
valiant effort, we put forth our best
it’s in your gait, in your neck, in the nape
an intangible source of attraction
I paw at your collar, your chest
kiss your cheekbones, your brow, all the rest
snap as much into memory as I can
to pull up this day on command
walk on ‘til you’re gone, the last note of a song
a heart that was drawn in the sand
